Mythologically: feeling home

Last week we finally got the keys for our future nook. There’s a lot to be done… a lot. I mean, a lot, you have no idea… but we will commit to it and one bite at a time we will get to the end.
We spent tuesday cleaning up, the people who where there before us left a pigsty behind, after a whole day spent tidying up it looks like an apartment with some potential :)

Most of all we noticed that there are three main things to take care of to make a house a home: cozy, nice, comfy, friendly and all these beautiful adjectives.

Light, smell, temperature. In this order.

Light: sometimes exposure blesses you, some other times you’re less lucky, but in any case when it’s dark in the evening light is all on you. White light gives a hospital-feeling, it’s way too cold: I never liked the yellow light that much, but after seeing a room lit by white light I saw how sad this one was… really sad!
Lampshades in the middle of the room can give bad shadows here and there, to play safe sparse and diffused light is better, maybe a light on a wall reflecting in the room, or at least a lot of lamps :)
Choose the right power for your lightbulbs: too strong and everything looks washed out, too feeble and you won’t know if you’re chopping carrots or zucchinis.

Smell: ça va sans dire… well, we have to “dire” (say) something, because when you spend a whole day in a stinky place to polish it up untill it smells of soap and incense, you also appreciate a lot more any kind of environment that does not smell bad, you’ll appreciate also the smell of fresh laundry and baked cookies and plants coming from your home, the scent of your mom’s favourite candle (which you usually thought you hated), I ended up loving the smell of bleach and I can’t wait to smell wallpaind and new wood. I rest my case :)

Temperature: this one too is a bit obvious, but a home with a nice air flow (with windows creating this flow) in summer is pretty helpful, or a nicely protected and warmed up home by winter is definately enjoyable. This makes me thing about those times, in November nights, when you see windows lit and maybe someone passing by it, and there’s this yellow, rich, warm light… *_* No? Just me? Oh well :)

Now you! Tell me what you think gives “that home-y feeling” that you can’t live without?

Ps: Leroy Merlin vende vernici ecologiche, dicono, molto belline

      Perfeche?
